Maren Nakazato Lafreniere studied fine arts photography at Arizona State University in 1987-88. She continued shooting while living in Japan for several years, then moved to the Bay Area in 1996. From 1999-2001, she has both curated and exhibited in various group shows locally. In 1999, she began exploring the intersection of Asian ancestry in the New World through photographing folk masks of Asian mythological figures in California gardens and regional parks. In 2000, she cofounder Out of Focus, a photographic arts cooperative now known as Imaginari. In 2001, her work metamorphasized as she combined photography, stained glass and digital skills in the latest series, Memory . Memory explores the break down of fact and narrative over time into impressions and interpretations.
